Glad you're back. Good luck with finals. (Well, not luck, but best wishes.)
Regarding washing, I would probably put it in the washer, with a mild soap, on the delicate cycle. If I knew the yarn content, I would probably put it in the dryer, with a couple of bath towels, on just barely warm. If your dryer has a sensor, then set it for damp. You can always add time if needed but I wouldn't dry it completely; just enough to get the drying started. Then I'd lay it out flat, on a white towel or sheet, just to make sure that there is no color transfer. Hope this helps. See you in Burbank.

Elyse,
So glad your back. It's always exciting to get new/old treasures. The shelf is gorgeous, and made by your grandfather makes it extra special. Good luck on your exams and happy hunting.

Your blanket looks like a form of hairpin lace. I have washed them in a washing machine and have always used Tide. With current yarn, no shrinking or getting bigger. If it was made in the 70's or 80's you could be okay with a washing machine wash. I currently make hairpin lace afgans, so easy. Hard to see the columns but the edging is like mine.

Elyse,

I'm so happy that you have received these wonderful family heirlooms! My mom (who knits, crochets, and can sew very well) advised to me when I received a hand-made crochet blanket as a baby shower gift when my baby girl was born, to hand wash it with detergent made for baby clothes, I think its called Dreft? Then lay it out to dry. Don't hang it, as it will stretch it.

My "baby girl" will now be 14 years old next week. She will be joining me this year at Jamboree and is looking forward to meeting you and experiencing her first genealogy conference for the first time. I'm looking forward to seeing you and all of my genealogy friends again too and if you have any questions about the blanket, let me know and I will give my mom a call. :-)

Sounds like your mom :) . It really made me smile reading this because I could picture her saying all of that. I'm very thankful she was in my life. She was a great teacher.

Hey Elyse!

I was so excited when you twittered about my blog several weeks back. I somehow always talk myself into thinking that no one under 40 gets as crazy excited about genealogy like I do. So thanks for the reassurance! I also think its pretty crazy that we have the same name, both dig genealogy and the likes, and I am an elementary school teacher. If you're ever in the Austin area we should meet up for something wonderful to eat. I'd love to hear all about your adventures!

Visit a local pioneer cemetery and look for headstones of people who died young --who obviously had no descendants. Select a couple headstones and take photos of the markers. Then use your online and old-school resources to try to discover their ancestry and any family history. Because it is a local cemetery, you can easily do courthouse searches for records as well as newspaper searches in your local library. When you have gathered some insights, arrange the information and post to find-a-grave, ancestry.com, and/or donate to your local library/genealogy center.

This is a good way to learn new search strategies, refine your skills by making new discoveries, and pay respect to someone who may have been completely forgotten until now.
